School of Business Innovation Professor Receives "40 Under 40" Recognition

(Portland, Oregon) March 24, 2005 ---- Melissa Appleyard, Ames Professor in Management of Innovation and Technology at the School of Business (SBA) at Portland State University, has been named to the Portland Business Journal’s “40 Under 40” List.

The listing recognizes young and talented business leaders in the Portland region who are making significant contributions in their field of expertise, and will be making an impact in the community in the coming years. Those recognized are selected based on professional accomplishment, community involvement, and professional recognition.

Appleyard’s research at PSU concentrates on how knowledge creation and diffusion catalyzes economic growth and business longevity in technology-intensive industries, including the semiconductor industry. She recently secured a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant for Oregon’s Lab2Market Initiative, aimed at the commercialization of new-to-the-world technologies originating from Oregon’s universities. She was named the School of Business’s Ames Professor in 2003, and is one of the lead faculty members in the Innovation Management option within PSU’ s MBA+ graduate business program.

“Melissa’s academic contributions are immeasurable, ranging from the classroom to her research projects,” said Scott Dawson, Dean of the School of Business. “She not only contributes to the growth of our students in the field of innovation leadership here at PSU; the Lab2Market Initiative she’s stewarding will create high end jobs and a new generation of inventors focused on the commercialization of university-originated technologies.”

Appleyard holds a Ph.D. in Economics from UC Berkeley and a B.A. in Economics/International Area Studies from UCLA.
