PSU Finance Professor John Bizjak Named SEC Fellowship

John Bizjak, the Gerry and Marilyn Cameron Professor of Finance, has been awarded a one-year professional academic fellowship to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) starting August, 2002.

Bizjak will serve as advisor on issues surrounding corporate finance and corporate governance. He currently teaches corporate financial management, portfolio theory and risk management. His research, which has been cited by the Economist, The Wall Street Journal and Business Week, examines issues covering managerial compensation, corporate governance and antitrust law.

The SEC fellowship is a highly competitive opportunity for accounting and finance professors to be involved directly in contemporary accounting issues. The fellowship involves reviewing filings by public companies to identify significant accounting and disclosure problems, and presenting training and education to policy makers and attorneys in the SEC.

“Since an important part of my professional career examines corporate financing and governance decisions, this is an interesting time to be at the SEC,” said Bizjak. “I’m looking forward to being involved in what appears to be an expanded role of the Commission in restoring faith in financial markets.”

Bizjak and his family, including his wife Kristi Yuthas, an accounting professor at PSU, will move to Washington, D.C. Professor Yuthas has accepted a visiting professorship at American University for the year.

Bizjak is the first recipient of the Gerry and Marilyn Cameron Professorship in Finance, endowed by the Camerons to support faculty in the area of Finance. Gerry Cameron, former CEO and chairman of U.S. Bancorp, is a leading supporter of the School of Business at PSU.
