Information Technology Research Named "Paper of the Year" by Peers

(PORTLAND, OR) -- A research paper co-authored by Neil Ramiller, Ahlbrandt Professor in Management of Innovation and Technology at the PSU School of Business, has earned recognition as “Best Paper, 2004” from Management Information Systems Quarterly, a peer-reviewed scholarly journal.

"Innovating Mindfully with Information Technology” was published in the 2004 December issue of MIS Quarterly, widely regarded as one of the top two journals for information systems academics. The journal publishes research regarding management of information technology and the use of information technology for managerial and organizational purposes.

Co-authored with Burt Swanson, professor at UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, the paper examines the challenges that managers and their organizations face when major new information technology innovations come to command the attention of the industry. Swanson and Ramiller introduce the concept of mindfulness in I.T. management, and explore how it can make the difference between success and failure when businesses attempt to innovate using I.T. An abstract of the paper can be viewed at: www.misq.org/archivist/vol/no28/Issue4/Swanson.html.

Peer journal recognition is subject to rigorous review by associate editors, senior editors and the editor-in-chief of the academic publication. In notifying Ramiller, Carol Saunders, MIS Quarterly Editor-in-Chief, stated, “The decision was a difficult one since there were so many good papers. Thus, it is truly an honor for your paper to have been selected to receive this award.”

"Neil’s recognition is yet another example of the caliber of research and expertise we have here at SBA,” says Scott Dawson, Dean of the School of Business . “His innovation management background and this kind of recognized work is a big contribution to the innovation core of our MBA+ program.”

Ramiller and Swanson’s recognition will be added to the journal’s website listing of annual best papers and the two will be recognized at a MIS Quarterly Editorial Board event in December.
